In this paper, the major reasons for selecting video detection systems for traffic monitoring and incident detection are discussed, together with some of the underlying detection principles. Comparing video detection with inductive loop detectors makes no sense. Video detection can do more and even better. Wide area detection to monitor and optimise the traffic flow in cities and thus reduce pollution is possible. Video detection systems offer the information needed by traffic managers for the efficient handling of incidents. Standard traffic parameters can also be provided. Accurate tracking of the queue tail position and calculation of the expected travel time lie within reach. The solution of using video lives up to all major quality criteria; it is cost effective, reliable and transparent. Installation requirements essentially focus on the characteristics of the camera. Out of the more than 1500 video detectors installed worldwide, the results of some sites are presented in this paper.
