Samenvatting

The English version of B 14153 is presented. Road markings, notably lane markers, are often only poorly visible when the road is wet. This is particularly a problem at night on unlit roads. A study is made of whether a solution for this problem can be found on the basis of the known, published literature. The most important conclusions are: precise requirements for the visibility of road markings (lane markers) cannot be given at present; raised markers with corner-cube reflectors perform best as regards night-time visibility on wet, unlit roads, followed by other types of reflectorised raised markers, corrugated lines, thermoplasts and finally road paint; for daytime visibility the sequence is more or less reversed. Further field tests are recommended regarding the performance of different types of markings, taking into account the visibility under other circumstances (dry roads, daylight). (Author/publisher)
