Every state in the usa now requires all applicants for an original drivers license to experience a vision screening, even though there is not as yet complete uniformity in screening standards throughout the united states. This manual is intended to help improve the understanding of vision screening procedures. It is based on current data, accumulated through research and experience over the past years, as it relates to the task of the examiner. Vision and the driving task is described in relation to basic facts affecting seeing, common vision related conditions and the correction of refractive states. The administration of a vision screening program and the role of the examiner is discussed. American association of motor vehicle administrators' recommended standards are given. It is anticipated that this new edition of the manual will help to promote standardization, and to serve as a guide for the more comprehensive vision screening of driver license applicants.
