Samenvatting

This chapter considers the translation of drivers' visual needs into specifications for vehicle design. The driver's field of view is considered including direct and mirror fields. The range of driver eye locations and drivers' vision are discussed. The main field of view considerations for vehicle designers are outlined and relevant European and US regulations listed. Methods of measuring and assessing fields of view are described including direct measurement, laboratory tests using the two light method, and computer modelling using SAMMIE. Developments in design and evaluation are considered covering aspects of mirror vision, buses and trucks, off-road vehicles and improving vision for vehicle occupants.
