Samenvatting

This short paper describes the Visual Communication Network (VCN), developed by Telecite. It is a unique communication system that provides real-time visual and auditory information inside transit vehicles and on station platforms. The system especially benefits elderly travelers and those with visual or hearing impairments. It can display and orally communicate instructions in the case of emergencies; information concerning schedules or system delays; the name of the next station on line; campaigns to promote use of the transit system; and security messages. The VCN can also provide non-essential visual information; news, weather, sports, local events, and advertising. Brief details of the system architecture are provided, and of the services offered. The results of a pilot project which tested both the system's reliability, and the reaction of both normal users and disabled passengers to the information provided are also presented briefly.
