In a survey of the visual impact of parked cars on the rural landscape, some of the residents of Windsor were asked to rate still photographs of rural scenes. The photographs included varying numbers of parked cars in the view and the interviewees rated them on a seven box scale ranging from 'extremely unpleasant' scored as one to 'extremely pleasant' scored as seven. The rating values decreased as either the number of cars or the percentage area of cars present in the scenes increased. In the change from no cars to fifteen cars the ratings fell by one and a half scale units, which is similar to the difference in people's ratings of a fine national park landscape and of a more commonplace rural scene.
