This report reviews the current information about visual perception and road safety, where the various types of research are related to each other. The report offers an overview of: (1) the relevance of visual perception in connection with road safety; (2) the more fundamental knowledge about visual perception; and (3) knowledge obtained from practical study. For example, attention is focused on the purpose of perception in traffic and which characteristics are relevant. In a more fundamental sense, subjects such as the eye, eye movements, and the role of attention and visual selection are discussed. In addition, information on applied research into a number of subjects is summarized, namely: (i) lines and markings on the road surface; (ii) public lighting; (iii) signs and other information carriers along the road; and (iv) the perception of other road users. The report concludes by indicating how, given the available knowledge, practical problems can be approached and offers a summary of recommended research which can assist in solving these problems more effectively and more rapidly in the future.
