Samenvatting

This paper summarises work in progress of VITUS project. The main aim of VITUS project is to build and implement a prototype for an automatic video image analysis system in order to increase safety in tunnel roads. To achieve their objectives, VITUS is divided into two subprojects called VITUS-1, and VITUS-2 respectively. The former is a feasibility study about video image analysis in tunnels, and it defines a concept mainly based on automatic incident management based on digital video image analysis. The latter addresses the implementation of the prototype and evaluation of the system. This prototype has to accomplish the following tasks: (1) automatically recognizing alarm situations in road tunnels; (2) alerting the tunnel personnel and - if necessary - the road users; and (3) automatic storage of traffic incident video sequences. Experiments on real sequences using innovative image processing algorithms display promising results. A more systematic evaluation of the system is planned.
