Samenvatting

As of June 1, 1996, the moped certificate will be introduced in the Netherlands. Persons who from that date attain the age of sixteen and wish to ride a moped or cycle with auxiliary motor (In Dutch: "snorfiets") will have to pass a theory examination in order to obtain this certificate. An exploration was performed amongst 300 young moped riders using a slide series developed by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre (CBR). The knowledge measurement showed that most youngsters' understanding of the traffic process was inadequate in order to pass the theory examination. The results will be compared with a knowledge measurement performed one year after introduction of the theory examination for the moped and examination for the moped and cycle with auxiliary motor. The introduction of a theory certificate will also be evaluated on other aspects. A plan has been drawn up to perform the evaluation one year after introduction of the theory examination, in combination with a survey to be conducted amongst young moped riders. The knowledge on current voluntary moped courses in the Netherlands and the effectiveness of the practical moped examination in Germany would seem to support the desirability of incorporating a practical section in the moped examination.
