Samenvatting

Waiting times of pedestrians are greatly dependent on traffic intensities and road width. Both can be modified. Traffic islands are suitable to reduce waiting times strongly. A useful criterion for taking measures is a waiting time of 15 s for 95% of the pedestrians crossing the road. Based on this philosophy traffic islands in Amstelveen were constructed while resurfacing the road. In some cases zebra crossings were removed. The article gives a description of a crossing with traffic lights operated by push buttons and programmed in such a way, that optimal results are obtained for both road traffic and pedestrians.
