Possibilities are being explored for building new parking facilities near the ring road around Amsterdam, with rapid public transport connections to the city centre. A special model was used to calculate the most suitable sites as regards accessibility, routing and transport demand. Some ten sites were finally selected for the present and future situation. These are all situated near an exit of the ring road and have direct public transport connections to the city centre. Although all sites are thus easlily accessible by car as well as by public transport, there are considerable differences in the quality of their accessibility. Sites connected with the city centre by high-quality public transport are most suitable for the development of a transferium. Transferia can play an important role in keeping the city centre accessible to car traffic and, to a lesser extent, in reducing car usage.
