This research tries to establish a classification of the "new style" roundabout in the Netherlands, with regard to cyclist provisions. The main characteristics of this type of roundabout are the priority for the traffic on the roundabout, and one-lane entries and exits with a radial approach to the equally one-lane roundabout. The classification is based on road categories, function and driving task. In areas with a flow function, a roundabout with separated cycle path seems the safest solution. This is confirmed by the victims for this type of roundabout. In a residential area, a roundabout without any specific provision for cyclists appears to be the safest solution (not significant). In an area with an access function, forming the transition between residential and flowing traffic, a roundabout with an integrated cycle path seems the safest solution, though this has not been proved in this study.
