Why do we move? And where do we go? : TIGRIS XL, a new land use and transport interaction model in The Netherlands, in which moving of households and companies have been estimated on the basis of observed data. A change in infrastructure will lead to an adjustment of traffic flows as a result of shifting destinations, modal split, route choice or time-of-day. Besides the changes in traffic flow, spatial developments and activity patterns might alter in a reaction to infrastructural changes. From a policy point of view, these changes are of interest, but previous studies have shown different results and quantitative analyses are rather limited. In order to perform more quantitative studies, a new land-use transportation interaction model for AVV (Transportation Research Centre), who are the owner of the model, has been developed by RAND Europe, Spiekermann & Wegener and Bureau Louter. This paper describes the features of the model TIGRIS XL and discusses the estimation results for the residential location and labour market. One of the most important conclusions is that accessibility is of minor importance in the choice of a new residence. Demographic characteristics, dwelling availability and characteristics of the neighborhood are the most significant variables in residential location choice. In the labour market, accessibility is of greater importance, where companies need to benefit more from better accessibility. The differences between different types of labour are striking.
