Samenvatting

Research in road design focuses primarily on the definition and further development of the design parameters in detail or in their interaction. Psychological aspects of driving are part of these investigations. The explicit consideration of the human capacities and limitations, such as sensation and perception, as well as their influence on driving behaviour is not yet sufficient. Such aspects are generally referred to as human factors. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the psychological aspects of drivers and to develop suggestions for integrating them into the guidelines on road design in a generalized form. For this purpose a close interdisciplinary collaboration between the subject areas of traffic and transportation psychology and road planning/ road design was carried out. Firstly, a comprehensive analysis of the national and international literature was carried out on human factors relevant to rural road design. Based on this, all design elements relevant to the consideration of Human Factors in rural road design were researched. With the acquired knowledge, an interface analysis was carried out. It was examined to what extent the perceptual-psychological human factors identified as relevant by literature analysis have already been taken into account in the current guidelines on rural road design. On this basis, action proposals were formulated on how the human factors relevant to the road design can be used in the design and in the evaluation of existing roads of the network. The findings were applied by way of example to roads of the existing network. As a result of this thesis, suggestions for a knowledge document have been developed, which, in addition to the previous recommendations of planning practice, can be made available as a supplementary instrument.
