To promote safe walking and to reduce the number of pedestrian traffic crashes, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), American Automobile Association (AAS), the National Safety Council (NSC), and more than 100 service organizations and community groups across the nation joined together to create a national pedestrian safety program called Walk Alert. The goal of the combined effort is to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities that involve pedestrians. (Author/publisher)
