In Indian cities, a large proportion of transport demand is met by non-motorized modes such as walking and bicycles. However, the facilities provided for pedestrians and bicycle users are meager in almost all cities. Consequently, their involvement in road accidents is very high. In spite of growing motor vehicles in Indian cities, motorization levels are expected to be lower as compared to developed countries for a long time to come. Therefore, large transport demand would still continue to be satisfied by walking and bicycles, although in many cities their share has been declining. This paper concludes that the present levels of walk trips should at least be maintained and the share of bicycle trips be increased in all cities through various measures in order to achieve the goals of 'sustainable transport' development and equity.
