This paper reports on the evaluation of Walk With Care, an intervention targeted at older pedestrians in a local government area. Transport SA and an inner-suburban Council jointly implemented the project. The evaluation used a `realistic evaluation' approach and included a pre-implementation survey among the target population (65 years and over), concerning pedestrian safety issues for older pedestrians in the implementation council area and in two comparative councils. A post-implementation survey was conducted in the implementation area. The methodology also included semi-structured stakeholder interviews. The evaluation indicated that older people consistently regard pedestrian issues very seriously, and recognise and describe them with highly specific local detail. The program worked well when it recognised the changing physical and response capacity in older pedestrians, but avoided an approach that could be construed as patronising or condescending; and when it associated itself with socially valued and meaningful activities while respecting, utilising and building upon the existing capacity of participants to find strategies to avoid casualty and death.
