Samenvatting

The UK Department for Transport has contributed £10 million to the charity Sustrans to develop the first phase of the 'Links to Schools' initiative to extend the National Cycle Network to schools. This booklet shows how 'Links to Schools' benefits the community and achieves some of the objectives of local authority Local Transport Plans. Linking schools to their communities via traffic-free and traffic-calmed routes can promote cycling and walking to school. This booklet explains funding issues and how to get involved in 'Links to Schools'. Case studies are presented of the implementation of 'Links to Schools' in Market Harborough, Nuneaton, Grantham, Bradford, Bootle, Lytham St Annes, Newhaven, Cheltenham, Portsmouth, Slough, Kings Lynn, Albrighton, South Tyneside, Swindon and Todmorden.
