This paper presents a literature review of the effectiveness of bicycle education for primary school children. The literature suggests that it can be helpful in improving children's riding skills and behaviours if the course is of sufficient quality. Queensland Transport has undertaken a review of Bike Ed delivery across Queensland to determine how widely and in what ways it is being delivered. The review found that there is ad hoc delivery of a variety of courses called "Bike Ed", but many bear little resemblance to the national Bike Ed program. Queensland Transport, in partnership with the PCYC and schools in Mackay, is establishing a formal trial of Bike Ed. The trial will focus on testing the effectiveness of a delivery model where seed funding has been provided to employ a Bike Ed trainer. The trial aims to expose as many year 4 children as possible to a comprehensive Bike Ed course. The paper concludes with a description of the proposed evaluation process.
