Samenvatting

This book reviews the history of the world's roads, highways and bridges, from prehistoric times to the present day. The changes in design throughout the ages are presented, including diagrams of crosssections of pavements and photographs and diagrams of the various bridge types. The changing demands for transport are also reviewed, and the effect this has upon the development of different road transport modes and networks discussed. Special attention is given to the effect of the car, and its effect upon roads, cities and society. Other factors which have influenced the development of the road infrastructure, such as for example, military requirements and the need to provide a method of financing road construction and maintenance, are also covered. A section is also provided which lists the major advances in design, construction, legislation, or administration in chronological order. This includes, for example, the completion dates of important bridges such as London Bridge, the date that Norse law defines road widths, and the date when tolls were collected on specific roads or bridges.
