Samenvatting

In April 1999 the United States Department of Transportation Professional Capacity Building Program culminated a research effort by publishing a report titled "Building Professional Capacity in ITS: Documentation and Analysis of Training and Education Needs in Support of ITS Deployment". In an effort to respond to the needs identified in this report, the University of Michigan and Virginia Tech, in cooperation with the Professional Capacity Building (PCB) Program, developed a web-based two-course sequence titled "Essential Competencies for the Transportation Professional of the Future". This two-course sequence focuses on the top ten essential competencies, which are packaged in four bundles: systems engineering, institutional issues, technology, and planning/evaluation. The overall goals of the two courses are (a) to provide current public-sector transportation professionals a breadth of knowledge and a depth of understanding and skills in the top ten identified essential competency areas that is sufficient to help them guide the deployment, operation, and maintenance efforts of state and local transportation agencies and (b) to provide an opportunity for registered participants to work on supervised team projects involving real world transportation issues, problems, and solutions. The two-course sequence is designed to be available any time, anywhere there is internet access, i.e., asynchronous delivery over the World Wide Web (cpd.engin.umich.edu/transed). For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
