Samenvatting

Driving into the road shoulder on relatively narrow roads with a speed limit of 80 km/h in rural areas of residence is a problem for traffic safety. Directions for design of roads in this category are: no lines at all or at most a centre line suggesting the road's axis. A drawback of the latterdesign is that the transition from road to shoulder is not improved compared with roads without line marking, and that the lateral position of vehicles on roads with a centre line is more forced towards the road's edge. Therefore, as alternative to the axis line four roads had edgelines, without a centre line. This kind of edgelines should conserve a clear transition from road to shoulder, and will also ameliorate road direction in case of poor visibility owing to adverse weather conditions or darkness. An experiment with two versions of edgelines is conducted in two pilot areas and the results are presented.
