Samenvatting

Possibilities of decreasing speed are discussed from the point of view of the traffic engineer. The main point is the willingness of all road users to accept the measures. Many people hold opinions on traffic safety but feel that there is no practical solution to the problem. In the first place the relative speeds of the different road users must be considered. Furthermore it is not necessary for roads to be as wide as they are at present. It is not necessary to wait for large structural alterations; small measures such as reconstruction of the pavement, the placing of a lighting column, can do much. The engineer should not be obsessed with new ideas such as "woonerven", but should try to keep in mind the main purpose, the safety of the road user.
