Global warming is scientifically proven. The phenomenon can only be explained by human activities. Green house gasses (GHG) like CO2 play an important role. Traffic is one of the main sources of GHG. In this paper we will try to answer the question whether sustainable mobility, i.e. mobility which does not contrubute to global warming, is possible in the Netherlands in the near future. We use the preliminary results of the scenario study Welfare and Living Environment. The study shows that CO2 emissions continue to rise in three out of four scenarios. The danger of climate change in those scenarios is high. Sustainable mobility is only possible with additional policy measures. The emission reductions needed can only partly be achieved within the transport sector itself. Options to realize reductions are there, but the reductions can only be achieved if supported by strong international cooperation and a strong government. These conditions are only present in the so-called Strong Europe scenario. (Author/publisher)
