Samenvatting

This report describes the literature on the relations between residential location and workplace and the influence of the traffic and transport system on these relations. The main conclusions are: (1) The residential choice and the choice for the work location and changes in this locations are influenced by many factors. Not only age, income, sex, education and the traffic and transport system are of importance. Also important seem to be the dynamics in life cycle of individuals and households, careers in the housing market and the labour market and mobility careers, dynamics in the housing market and the labour market and in the transport system, as well as their relations. The present models are not capable in in modelling this complex relations. Until new models are developed, some of the dynamics can be modelled in the present models; and (2) for residential choice and the choice of the workplace distance between old and new locations seems to be very important. These distances are strongly related to the migration motives. Many researchers do not consider differences in this distance. Therefore, sometimes relevant information is lost and a wrong description of reality is given. (A)
