Samenvatting

With the Australian Driver Trainers' Association, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau developed a project which attempts to extend the focus of pre-licence driver training beyond the traditional areas of basic vehicle control skills and formal road rules, with more emphasis on promoting an understanding of risk factors, and the fact that safety is a matter of what drivers choose to do, not just what they are able to do. The Key Facts for Young Drivers package recognises the role of professional driver trainers in this area; in particular, the important but difficult task of teaching young drivers about risk factors such as speed and fatigue, and encouraging them to practice between lessons. For many novices, professional trainers are likely to have more credibility on such topics than a parent, a teacher or a government agency. They are also well placed to integrate a theoretical knowledge about risk factors into practical driving tasks. This paper describes the rationale of the package, the development process and targeting to learners. (Author/publisher) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
