Samenvatting

This paper considers the National Safe Kids Campaign as the first and only nationwide childhood injury prevention programme in the United States focusing on unintentional injury to 0-14 year-olds. The campaign was launched in the year 1987. The aim of the campaign is to help reduce the number of children who are disabled or killed as the result of unintentional injury. Therefore, the extensive campaign organization works together with all the parties involved. One of the five major unintentional injury risk areas targeted by the campaign are traffic injuries of passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The campaign launched the Bike Helmet and Bake Safety Awareness Strategy in the USA in the year 1989. The most important aim of this strategy is to encourage more bicycle helmet wearing by children. This is done in cooperation with all the parties involved. The 1993 Safe Kids America campaign presented is one of the largest outreach efforts undertaken in the history of childhood injury prevention.
