Road environment factors are often a key cause of accidents. Fortunately, most of them are related to road engineering and traffic management which are within the direct control of design and traffic engineers. If we can answer the question `What determines accident risk?' in this context, we can provide engineers with an effective means of reducing casualties and their severity. This paper presents some of the main results of recent TRRL research to quantify the effect on the severity and numbers of injury accidents of individual elements of design taking into account the flow of pedestrians and of vehicles, according to vehicle type and manoeuvre as well as many other factors. The means of applying this knowledge to reduce casualties are also described. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference, see IRRD 840727.
