Samenvatting

The DYNA traffic control system was developed by the European DRIVE II programme; it uses measurements of traffic flow and speed, from induction-loop sensors, with a database and traffic models to predict traffic conditions up to an hour ahead. It applies both traffic control and travel information strategies, and its main modules are a monitoring system, a traffic prediction module, and a control strategy generator. Its control levels include hierarchical control over the whole road network, routeing control, and co-ordinated local control. The European Union's Fourth Framework project DACCORD extends DYNA to include the implementation and demonstration of a dynamic traffic management system (DTMS). It also extends the work of the EUROCOR traffic control project, and the GERDIEN project for systems architecture and traffic prediction. DACCORD aims to design, implement, validate and demonstrate a DTMS for integrated and co-ordinated control of inter-urban motorways, and to develop further an Open Systems Architecture (OSA) for inter-urban traffic management. DACCORD's main demonstrations will be conducted at: (1) the Boulevard Peripherique and its connecting motorways in the Paris area; (2) the Brescia-Mestre motorway corridor in Italy; and (3) the Amsterdam Orbital Motorway in The Netherlands.
