Samenvatting

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have often been criticized as futuristic technology that offers little benefit toward solving transportation problems at the municipal level and in the short-term. Even ITS technology that offer near-term benefits, such as ramp metering systems, are often implemented under the purview of state government, who typically receive the credit in the public's eye for the safety and mobility gains achieved. However, such criticisms of ITS are misplaced. There are several ITS technologies in use today that are helping municipal governments move traffic more efficiently, improve the services offered to their citizens, save money, and save lives. Three examples of how futuristic ITS technology is helping municipal governments meet their needs are presented. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
