The authors consider the factors influencing the behaviour of young drivers based on a questionnaire sent to 42,000 new drivers between the ages of 18 and 20. Data were collected on mileage driven, accident occurrence and attitude. Although males were found to be involved in more accidents than females this was found to be proportional to mileage. The frequency of accidents decreased with driving experience. Alcohol and excessive speed were implicated more often in fatal accidents to male drivers than female. Attitudes to risk estimation and driving skill differed between the sexes.
