Samenvatting

This article summarises the basic functions of the driver assistant. These show clearly that understanding and evaluation of the driver's actions are needed. Most driver assistant functions are based on continuous information about the expected driver behaviour. Details are provided of the dynamic knowledge based driver model that provides such information. Specific reference is made to DAISY (Driver AssIstant SYstem). DAISY consists of four basic modules: (a) the reference driver, which comprises of the situation assessment function and a normative driver model; (b) the model of the actual driver; (c) the discrepancy interpretation module, which represents the advisor function; and (d) the warning device. Details are provided of how DAISY assesses situations and how knowledge about the actual driver can be used. The results of tests so far have been promising.
