This invited paper discusses issues of uniformity of traffic control devices from the Australian perspective, in the context of standards and approaches taken in various jurisdictions around the world. It considers issues about traffic signs, traffic signals, line marking and delineation. It discusses the primary Australian reference documents for uniform practice, it looks at some examples of international consistency and inconsistency, and discusses some specific aspects of the Australian approach, including testing of symbols, intersection control, traffic signals, parking control signs and use of arrows.
