Samenvatting

In this report the costs and benefits of motoring are assessed, with an emphasis upon regional variations in road maintenance and repair, traffic levels, road accident rates, car crime and parking provision. A breakdown is given by region of spending per kilometre on local and the motorway and trunk road network. Motoring costs in urban and rural areas are also compared. Travel in London is compared with other conurbations. The Automobile Association (AA) urges the government to tailor transport policy to differing regional needs and to remove regional inequalities.
