Samenvatting

This study of the UK motorcycling fleet was set up in response to rising motorcycle casualties. A questionnaire was returned by 1009 riders, representing a 20% response rate. 56% were long-term riders, 23% were new riders and 21% were returning riders. Long term riders were more likely to be single than returning riders. Rider types did not differ in their academic qualifications. 7% of new riders were in full time education. Small engine capacity motorcycles were under-represented in the sample and large engine capacity motorcycles were over-represented, especially among male, long-term and returning motorcyclists. A high number of motorcyclists ride as a leisure activity. Commuting riders were likely to own smaller engine capacity machines. All riders selected 'love of motorcycles' as the primary reason to purchase. All riders increased their usage in the summer months, both for commuting and leisure trips, and accidents increased at this time of year. Riders preferred aesthetic roads with wide sweeping curvature and impressive views. Just under 49% of riders particpated in group rides over 100 miles from home. New riders preferred smaller groups than other riders. Nearly 20% of riders had attended voluntary training courses, usually long-term riders. There was scope to encourage other riders to attend these courses. 25% of riders had been involved in an acident in the previous three years. New riders move up the engine capacity sizes faster than used to happen in the past. The year on year increase in the number of new and returning rides since 1996 coincides with the observed rise in accident rate. For the covering abstract see ITRD E124157.
