Samenvatting

Using data from a major research survey in London and other recent studies this paper examines the reasons why people do not make use of transport services even when they are available. The following criteria were investigated: a) lack of knowledge about the services available; b) reasons for not travelling, including poor health, environmental problems such as distance from a bus stop, fear of being attacked or of falling over, and the inability to stand for long periods. The paper also examines the extent to which bus users are aware of the improvements in design that have been introduced in recent years, with the intention of making buses easier to use for ambulant disabled people.
