In cooperation with a public transportation company a research-project was conducted to find out policy recommendations which are able to motivate people to voluntary use the bus system as a transportation means instead of a privately owned car. A model of the determinants of the individual bus-using behaviour is tested by means of a survey among a representative sample (N = 3.105) of the population of the rural district of Giessen. The theoretical core of this model is the `Theory of Planned Behaviour (TORA)'. In the present study, the central model constructs `attitude', `subjective norm', `perceived behavioural control' and `past behavioural frequency' can explain 70 percent of the variance of the construct `intention to use the bus system as a mode of travel for daily means'. The results of this study are given and discussed.
