It is becoming increasingly important for public transport companies to have details about the distances passengers travel, where they travel to, and which tickets they use. This paper set out the case for collecting such data. It also describes some methods for so doing. Some possible methods are: (1) an active registration of the passenger at embarkment and disembarkment; (2) collection by the companies of information available from the ticket, for example from a chipcard; and (3) an automatic registration by the transport vehicle of embarkment and disembarkment of the passengers by electronic marked tickets.
