Samenvatting

Road Wise : innovation in the field. Road traffic management is being used as means to realize higher goals, such as safety, network throughput, travel time reliability and quality of life of the road environment. Mostly this means that will be tried to direct and guide the traffic flows by means of influencing the behaviour of the individual road users. Drivers mental workload is getting heavier all the time. This is because of the increasing amount of traffic on the roads, (temporarily) narrower lanes, the construction of extra lanes, maximum speed getting dependent on the location of the driver, the amount of traffic on the road and the increasing amount of information on and along the road. All this together makes it essential for the Public Works Department to install structural changes in their way of managing road traffic. In the Road Wise pilot, as part of the innovation programme Roads to the Future, an in-car system is being developed with which introduction of those changes will be possible in a save way.
