Samenvatting

The roots of the women- driver stereotype are reviewed. It is concluded that they lie in assumptions and ideas that were accepted well before the automobile first began to affect American life. Previously established premises regarding the freedom and mobility of women in society, the definition of her "femininity" and the nature of her emotional, constitution led to the initial questioning of women's ability to drive.
