Work-related road safety is increasingly regarded as a vital issue for a wide range of private companies. Vehicles used in the course of employment are a part of the workplace and it has been estimated that work related road crashes in Australia account for about half of all occupational fatalities and 15% of national road deaths. Further, fleet vehicles are generally sold to private buyers within a few years. This suggests that the safety of a company’s fleet vehicles and the road safety behaviour of its employees is paramount when considering the road safety of the general population. RACV commissioned this report to gain a better understanding of work related road safety. The project includes a review of vehicle technology and driver based safety initiatives; a review of currently available resources that address work related road safety and consultations with a range of organisations. The report concludes by outlining best practice principles and priority actions for managers to improve a company’s road safety profile. (Author/publisher)
