Workshop: socio-political barriers in traffic safety work.

This paper contains sections of a workshop discussing the social and political effects that reduce the effectiveness of road safety work. Vlasta Rehnova spoke on the consequences of social changes in the Czech Republic since the introduction of democracy in 1989: a greater disregard of rules, less responsibility and more ruthlessness, while traffic safety is seen as unimportant. Martin Kosan described the negative effects of western civilization in the Czech Republic: faster cars; disrespect for laws or authority; and the development of out-of-town shopping outlets which require more car use. Werner Klemenjak proposed marketing methods to promote traffic safety, such as school-level education programmes to target young people, and taking into account the differing aims of various groups involved in traffic safety work.
