Samenvatting

In November 1997, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) initiated WorldSID, a global project, operating under the auspices of the ISO vehicle safety subcommittee: TC22/SC12. In the study presented in this poster, a description is given of this project. The aim of the project is to develop a universally acceptable, harmonised, advanced, mid-size male side-impact dummy. Another aim is that this dummy should be clearly superior to all those dummies currently in use for side-impact testing. The project is characterised by the involvement of delegates from relevant parties. One aspect dealing with the organisational structure of the project was the forming of three regional groups: one for Europe, one for the Americas and one for the Asia-Pacific region. The decision to form these three groups was made due to the global nature of the project. The development and fabrication of the first prototype dummy will be completed during the third quarter of 2000. The WorldSid dummy is based on recent anthropometry and mass data published by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). The dummy has been developed making extensive use of new materials and numerical modelling techniques. The different elements of the dummy are: head; neck; shoulder/thorax/abdomen; lumbar spine; pelvis; full arms; half arms; upper legs; lower legs; load cells, accelerometers; and in-dummy data acquisition.
