Samenvatting

This paper summarises the nature and trends in drinking and driving in industrialised countries. Data collected in the early 1990s showed that the dramatic reductions seen in the 1980s did not continue. Declines were reversed in the early 90s, stabilised in the mid 90s and began to increase. The current situation in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, UK and US is discussed. The reasons for the trends seen are examined. It is often the case that a slowing in progress or a reversal is accompanied by a reduction in enforcement or publicity concerning the problem. The reinvigoration of programmes is recommended.
