The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the redesigned Ford F-150 the highest overall rating. It has also been awarded a "best pick" designation for its performance in a high-seed frontal crash test. The Institute bases its ratings on vehicles' performance in 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into a deformable barrier. The F-150's performance ratings are a significant improvement over those of the 2001 F-150, which was rated poor overall . When the 2001 model was tested, the Institute reported a massive collapse in the occupant compartment. Due to this collapse, high injury forces were recorded on the driver dummy. The new F-150's occupant compartment held up extremely well and the dummy's movements were well controlled.
