Samenvatting

X-FLO is an in-ground pedestrian kerbside detection system supplied in the UK by Advanced Traffic Supplies. It gained type approval in 2004, but take-up by local authorities has been slow. One reason for this is that engineers are concerned about whether the pads themselves actually cover enough ground to ensure that pedestrians will be in the detection area. The directive covering in-ground detectors (TR2182B) does not specify the must-detect area, but leaves it up to the equipment supplier. There are questions as to how much surface area must be covered by the pads to be comprehensive and how many will be required per crossing. People like the simplicity of the concept and apparent robustness of the pad. The pads are based on the same technology as loop detectors and the supplier has indicated that most crossings will work with two. Experience in other countries has shown that people very quickly learn that they need to stand on the pad. The tactile rubber mat cushion could easily be detected by blind or partially sighted people.
