Samenvatting

The purpose of this study was to investigate one link in this structure, the relation between life style, motives and behaviour. This has been carried out through a questionnaire study among young drivers, 20 years of age. They have reported about their life style, the importance of different motives related to driving, and different aspects of driving behaviour and driving style. The results show that there are several interesting relations between the three factors in the study. In a first step a factor analysis used to reduce the data and 16 aspects of life style were indentified which describe activities and interest in politics, sports, parties, music, literature, film, clothes, drugs etc. The data about motives were grouped into 4 different types which may be described as safety, social norm, adventure and transport motives. In a similar way, driving style data were reduced to 5 types which may be described as reckless, calm/mature, careful/tense, unaware/careless and patient/tolerant. In a second step a cluster analysis was carried out, which showed that life style, motives and driving style are related in a number of group specific profiles.
