This publication about wrong-way driving is an actualized and extended version of a study from 1981 (See B 19144 (IRRD 258645). In the publication the following is dealt with: the design of Dutch motorways and the potential risk locations; an analysis of the phenomenon of wrong-way driving in the Netherlands and other countries (See C 11062 (IRRD 491577) and C 11063 (IRRD 491578); more details of wrong-way driving on the basis of the available literature, mainly originating from the United States and Germany; measures to prevent wrong-way driving including the eventual possibilities of Motorway Traffic Signalling Systems, as well as a choice of measures whereby further attention is paid to cost effectiveness. In the Netherlands, nationwide action against wrong-way driving was undertaken by the Department of Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat) in 1980 and 1997. The measures taken during the second half of 1980 were: (1) a special inspection of junctions with motorways with a view to preventing wrong-way driving; and (2) the placing of two "no entry signs", each surmounting a sign reading "go back", on motorway exit roads facing potential wrong-way drivers. In 1997 the following additional measures were taken: (i) supplementary marking on the exit slip road in the form of special developed arrows; and (ii) improvement of the conspicuousness and visibility of the "no entry" signs, also during daylight hours.
