Operators of automated systems are vulnerable to task-induced fatigue that may impair performance and optimal use of automation. This chapter reviews the impacts of task fatigue, focusing especially on studies of automation in vehicle driving and operation of unmanned autonomous systems (UASs). Relationships between automation and fatigue are bidirectional. Various features of the system may influence multiple dimensions of an operator’s fatigue response, depending on both personal and system characteristics. The challenges of automation are in part those of maintaining vigilance, as the operator assumes a system-monitoring role, but other factors are also important. These include regulating effort, calibrating trust, and strategic adjustments to workload. Intelligent autonomy raises further issues including teaming with the system which may break down as the operator becomes fatigued. We conclude that resource depletion and effort regulation are basic mechanisms that may be prevalent in automated system operation, but domain-specific processes are also critical.
