ETSC: ‘Make Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) mandatory on all new motorcycles’

In a newly published report, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) calls on the European Union and European national governments to make anti-lock braking systems (ABS) mandatory on all new motorcycles, including those under 125cc.

The report shows that in 2021 in the EU, 3,891 people died in a motorcycle or moped accident. In the report, the ETSC makes more recommendations that should increase road safety for motorcycles and mopeds, such as standardizing a minimum age of 16 years to ride a moped, mandatory technical inspections and better enforcement of speed and helmet use.

SWOV is currently conducting an in-depth research into motorcycle accidents.
